Tenuate, an appetite suppressant, is prescribed for short-term use (a few weeks) as part of an overall diet plan for weight reduction. Your body starts to build up a resistance to the effects of Tenuate after a few weeks of treatment, which is when you should be well on your way to a new lifestyle and ready to stop Tenuate.
Appetite suppressants are not a substitute for proper diet. For maximum effects, this must be used in conjunction with a diet and exercise program.
It is available in two forms: immediate-release tablets (Tenuate) and controlled-release tablets (Tenuate Dospan).
Tenuate is recommended only for people with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (or 27 or greater if the person has other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol).
Side effects, that may diminish and dissapear during the course of the treatment, include restlessness, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, or dry mouth. If they continue or become bothersome, check with your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
